From: //jonCates Subject: Ascii Art - Antique RU was "[...] J8~g#|\;Net. Art{-^s1 [...]". Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 17:01:27 -0500 To: thingist@bbs.thing.net the official www site for the Venice Biennale: http://www.labiennale.org/ does not occur in the following googles: "vuk Cosic" + Venice + net.art + 2005 "vuk Cosic" + Venice + 2005 but the domains neme.org + www.manovich.net + rhizome.org + www.0100101110101101.org + post.thing.net do occur, altho not in that order. most importantly perhaps, these googles incl: "Ascii Art - Antique RU ASCII Art Farts: #2112: ACRONYMS (Tue, 2005 Apr 5) ... Vuk Cosic - Hotlist - Net-Art Pioneer and his recommended Web sites - Brief Article - Bibliography - ..." http://antiques.ru.com/ascii-art.html when searching the official Venice Biennale www site for Cosic, the site returns: http://www.labiennale.org/ "FIND RESULT No results for "cosic" Please search again." the same occurs when the search term is "Vuk Cosic": "FIND RESULT No results for "vuk cosic" Please search again." but, "net.art" is a different story altogether: "FIND RESULT 7 results for "net.art" # http://www.labiennale.org/en/dance/program/2004/maliphant.html ... * La Biennale - Visual Arts - Exhibition http://www.labiennale.org/en/visualarts/extra50/extra50/5.html * La Biennale - Visual Arts - Pavilions http://www.labiennale.org/en/visualarts/pavilions/participants/... * La Biennale - Visual Arts - Pavilions http://www.labiennale.org/en/visualarts/pavilions/participants/... * La Biennale - Visual Arts - Pavilions http://www.labiennale.org/en/visualarts/pavilions/participants/... * La Biennale http://www.labiennale.org/en/visualarts/2003/extra50/radar.html * La Biennale http://www.labiennale.org/en/visualarts/2003/extra50/snowshow.h..." only 01 of which in the current 2005 entries seems to have any rltn to net.art + that is the entry that incl's the following: "Module 3. Calin Man: net.art_kit (cd-rom, internet) 1 computer, 1 multimedia projector, 1 screen. As part of reVoltaire archive, the project net.art_kit contains the sum of the hypermedia works in html format. From the main menu various web site stories are accesed off-line. The on line link (reVoltaire@Venietzsche) is available during the Biennale. reVoltaire's archive features a number of characters with no spectacular biography and lazy above, who motivate their existence only through their name. Rarely one of these characters undertakes anything and then the importance of the action can be ignored without any fear." but does not incl any ref to Cosic. an obvious + perhaps comparatively uninteresting aspect of this situation, wherein the Venice Biennale in relation to Cosic + net.art has a low profile, is the carnival like inversion of the social order. the social order upturned is that which is [imagined/performed] as having the high art culture of the Venice Biennale positioned hierarchically above the domains listed above, i.e. post.thing.net. of course this well-{known|worn} narrative of social upset is an underpinning structural element to the net.art narrative as well. in these interlacing narratives, the operating tables have turned + the sewing machine remixes the umbrella in chance encounters provided by search results, googlewashing + metadata. w/the only net.art reference i was able to find advising me to casually ignore it's [author/developer/artist], i prepared to ask Cosic himself ware the lecture he gave could be found. i sent the following email to 2 of the Cosic addys as they appear on his www site (http://www.ljudmila.org/~vuk/) w/the same contents: "From: joncates AT criticalartware.net Subject: @ the Venice Biennial? Date: June 24, 2005 12:25:32 AM CDT To: vuk AT literal.si, vuk AT ljudmila.org hi Vuk Cosic on the thingist listserv Alessandro Ludovico recently wrote that in Venice (@ the Biennial?) you stated in a lecture you gave that the historical account or narrative of the naming of net.art from this glitched fragment "[...] J8~g#|\;Net. Art{-^s1 [...]" was invented. i am wondering about the invention + the lecture. i checked your site + searched the Venice Biennial site hoping that they might have documented the lecture or have a txt version up, but i couldn't find any documentation. was this lecture documented? do you have a txt version? curiously, // jonCates" both msgs bounced bak to me w/the same error: "Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table (in reply to RCPT TO command)" so now the unavailability of the Venice Biennale via google + Vuk Cosic's lecture via the Venice Biennale's official site becomes compounded by Cosic's own unavailability via email. now, thanks to both a thread on the domain above, rhizome.org, + Lauren Cornell in particular i have a new addy for Cosic + have resent the same msg. perhaps this msg will connect to Cosic + he will reply... in the meantime, i will continue to think about antiquing, accessibility + the availability of hystories in rltn to that most [amazing/surprising/surreal] search result i got above "Ascii Art - Antique RU"... // jonCates # http://www.r4wb1t5.org # http://www.criticalartware.net # http://www.filmvideoandnewmedia.info # http://www.newmedianowandthen.blogspot.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- t h i n g i s t message by //jonCates archive at http://bbs.thing.net info: send email to majordomo@bbs.thing.net and write "info thingist" in the message body --------------------------------------------------------------------
