Film, Video and New Media
FVNM 4866 9 AM - 4 PM TH
FALL 2005
MACHINIMA COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Machinima literally combines "machine" and "cinema" using computer-based games to develop film and media art. Machinima views video games and game culture as New Media. Video game engines become artistic toolsets and authoring systems allowing artists to use the underlying code structures to create their own media artworks. Students play video games, learn to render artworks in realtime with low cost, commercially available game engines and free and open source software systems, discuss online distribution, and screen machinima artworks. Prerequisite: FVNM 2100

    # BEGIN MACHINIMA SYLLABUS:
/// MACHINIMA.FVNM
//
// MACHINIMA.DVR
we will be [discussing/developing] Machinima projects as hystorically rooted + socioeconomically situated screen based experimental media art. these hystories + theorypractices will be [discussed/developed] w/perspectives that include early cinema to Film Art to Video Art to New Media. these domains [+/or] fields of artistic activity will be considered as technosocial + {digital|network}-culture specific [codes/concepts/constructs] that can + will be effected by you + your work as artists.

    // MACHINIMA.SYS
participants will be expected to use systems [demonstrated/discussed] in class, imagine + implement their own uses of these systems in the development of Machinima works, pieces + projects. the [technologies/systems] [demonstrated/discussed] will incl various forms of Machinima projects (i.e. Fake Science), games (i.e. Half-Life, DOOM, Quake, etc) + freely available tools + systems (i.e. Machinima Production Kit).
these [technologies/systems] + others should all be considered during the creation of work to be critiqued, performed + played during class meetings.

    // RE: MACHINIMA
students will follow self directed + determined research paths, develop journals, blog, diaries, sketchbooks +/or other such self-documenting praxis during the semester. in the case of digital praxis such as blogs, vlogs, etc students will make the URIs of these sites known to the class. in the case of analog or physical practices, students will make these available to me for review @ my request.

    // MACHINIMA.EVAL
we will critique, perform, play, inhabit + render all Machinima projects throughout the semester. i will address projects + students individually throughout the semester. we will sustain a continued conversation about all projects, systems, games, readings, screenings + skill sets. all participants will be constantly evaluated on their participation in these ongoing + sustained efforts.

attendance and punctuality are required.
3 absences == NO CREDIT.
2 lates == 1 absence.
6 lates == NO CREDIT.

    // MACHINIMA.CTRB
contribution by all participants to all aspects of the course is not only required but is the basis by which the development of the course as a social space of artistic experimentation, exchange + creation is made possible.

    // MACHINIMA.PRM
class will meet every THURS from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, w/a 01 hour break for nutrients, with the exception of Graduate Critique Week.
// MACHINIMA.DAY
every day in Machinima will be divided in the following manner
// MACHINIMA.DAY -> AM
//
// MACHINIMA.DAY -> AM -> ART.SYST
Machinima projects + artware applications + systems will be displayed, discussed + demonstrated.
// MACHINIMA.DAY -> AM -> NFO.EXCH
systems [demonstrated/discussed] in class, participants imagine + implement their own uses of these systems [+/or] develop their own artware applications + systems.
// MACHINIMA.DAY -> PM
//
// MACHINIMA.DAY -> PM -> NFO.EXCH
information exchange on systems continues after a midday break for nutrients.
// MACHINIMA.DAY -> PM -> SYS.PLAY
systems (including those [demonstrated/discussed] earlier, freely available [+/or] developed by participants) will played + critiqued by participants.

    // MACHINIMA.FWX
participants in Machinima must work w/in frameworks. frameworks are not assignments. frameworks occur in the life of an artist, assignments occur in the life of a student. the following frameworks will be mapped to specific chronological events on the Machinima calendar.
collaborative efforts in the realization of MACHINIMA.FWX are strongly encouraged.
// MACHINIMA.FWX -> ENVIRITRON.MCH
consider the construction of synthetic environments. how do cinematic spaces spread, influence, inform [+/or] infect 01 another? map this cinematic space, cartographically detailing potential events that could occur in your Machinima projects.
// MACHINIMA.FWX -> TIMEBASE.SPC
who exists in these time based spaces? what activities, cycles, loops, paths, trajectories, arcs, branches [+/or] frustrations contextualize their existences? render world views of time based spaces + their inhabitants for your Machinima projects.// MACHINIMA.FWX -> INTERVENE.SYS
intervene in an existing situation [+/or] simulation. redirect view points. articulate an alternative, experimental [+/or] previously unknown position through your Machinima projects.
